2021-09-18

The seriousness and urgency of the climate change issue has become the consensus of all countries in the world, and the " double carbon" target is a major strategic decision made by China based on the responsibility of promoting the building of a community of human destiny and the inherent requirement of achieving sustainable development. With the "double carbon" strategy as the engine, it is bound to promote the change and upgrade of China's industrial structure, so as to achieve continuous breakthroughs in industry, energy, technology and consumption. In order to better promote the development of green industry cycle and optimize the socio-economic system, under the guidance of Professor Geng Yong, Vice Dean of School of International and Public Affairs, Dean of School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Director of SJTU-UNIDO Joint Institute of Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, and as an editorial board member of Proceedings of Chinese Academy of Sciences, a research paper on "Carbon Neutral Strategy in the Context of Carbon Neutral Goals" was organized in Proceedings of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the top journal in China. The topic of "Energy Transition in the Context of Carbon Neutral Goals" invited academicians in the field of energy and environment to discuss how to promote the carbon neutral transition of China's energy industry from the aspects of energy development strategy, energy transformation, digital technology, circular economy, and economic and social benefit assessment of energy transition.

Huang Zhen, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the SJTU-UNIDO Joint Institute of Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, Chen Xiaohong, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Visiting Professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chief Professor of the SJTU-UNIDO Joint Institute of Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, Professor. Geng Yong, and Wei Wendong, Associate Professor of the SJTU-UNIDO Joint Institute of Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, presented high level papers in this topic. The research results can provide useful policy insights for China's energy sector to achieve carbon neutral transition, so as to ensure a cleaner and renewable energy structure and continuous improvement of energy efficiency, and to provide strong support for China to achieve carbon neutrality while developing with high quality.

This topic brings together important academic resources in the professional field, and builds an important framework for the research team to carry out in-depth systematic research in the field of resources and environment. The Institute will continue to optimize the research results and develop innovative and implementable technical capabilities to provide a high-level decision-making platform for the orderly promotion of China's "dual carbon" strategy.

Since its inauguration in November 2020, the SJTU-UNIDO Joint Institute of Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development has been focusing on green growth, circular economy, resource efficiency and environmental management and policy analysis as its research areas, focusing on cross-disciplinary research and learning exchange, striving for international cooperation and building a national high-end think tank. The Institute actively integrates the advantages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's resources, focuses on academic frontiers and needs, strives to achieve high-quality development, and promotes the global application of technology and disciplinary development. Featuring international exchange and cooperation, the Institute will establish a sustainable technology application center under the guidance of UNIDO and Shanghai Jiao Tong University to jointly promote the transformation of industrial green growth and the construction of eco-industrial parks in the Yangtze River Delta region and even nationwide to achieve regional synergistic development.
